Santiago Bernabeu
The Chamartin Stadium was the dream of one man who at already played and worked for the club many years, his name was Santiago Bernabéu. The man who later became the single most important driving force in the history of the club had vision and belief way ahead of his time. Santiago Bernabéu understood the need for what we now term 'Super Stadia' and he went about raising the capital needed to fulfil his dream. Bernabéu built a stadium and then filled it with the best players in the world, so creating the legend that is Real Madrid.On 14 December 1947, with a match between Real Madrid and the Portuguese club Os Belenenses, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium was inaugurated, the best and most modern stadium of its time. Then, in 1954, with the grounds first capacity extension, it became the largest in Europe.Chamartin was later renamed The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium as a tribute to its creator. The ground has hosted an endless number of big sporting and social events, among them are the following. - The Final of the 2nd European Cup won by Real Madrid (1957)
